Heritage documentation is the systematic recording of historic buildings, sites and cultural landscapes using measured surveys, photography, photogrammetry, LiDAR and GIS. In India, it underpins conservation work by the ASI, INTACH and state bodies, and provides the evidence base for heritage designation, repair and management.

Accurate documentation creates the baseline record for all conservation decisions. Without it, interventions are guesswork — and irreversible damage may go undetected.

Core methods

Hand measurement, total station survey, photogrammetry, terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), drone survey and GIS are the principal tools. Choice depends on site scale, budget and required accuracy.

Standards in India

INTACH Conservation Guidelines, the NMA protocols, and ISO 17068 govern documentation practice. ASI follows in-house standards for centrally protected monuments.

Heritage Documentation

The systematic recording of the physical fabric, condition and significance of a historic site or building, creating an accurate archive for conservation, management and research.

Measured Survey

A survey that records the actual dimensions of a building as-existing, producing measured drawings of plans, sections and elevations from direct physical measurement.

Condition Survey

A systematic physical inspection of a building or structure that records the state of each element — its material, any deterioration, and its urgency for intervention.

As-Built Survey

A survey that records the dimensions and condition of a structure as it actually exists, rather than as it was designed — often the starting point for heritage documentation.

Photogrammetry

The science and technique of obtaining reliable measurements and 3D models from overlapping photographs — the standard method for heritage surface documentation at scale.

Structure from Motion(SfM)

The photogrammetric algorithm that reconstructs 3D geometry from a set of overlapping 2D photographs by tracking common feature points across images.

Ground Control Points(GCPs)

Surveyed reference targets placed in the scene before photogrammetry or drone survey, used to scale and georeference the output to real-world coordinates.

Orthophoto

A geometrically corrected aerial or terrestrial photograph in which scale is uniform throughout, suitable for precise measurement — unlike a perspective photograph.

Ground Sampling Distance(GSD)

The size in real-world units (typically cm/px) represented by one pixel in a drone or aerial image — the primary metric for spatial resolution in drone survey.

Point Cloud

A set of millions of data points in 3D space, each representing a measured location on a surface — the primary output of laser scanning and dense photogrammetry.

LiDAR(Light Detection and Ranging)

A remote sensing technology that measures distances by emitting laser pulses and recording the return time — producing accurate 3D point clouds of surfaces.

Terrestrial Laser Scanning(TLS)

Ground-based 3D laser scanning where a scanner on a tripod captures a dense point cloud of its surroundings from a fixed position — the standard method for interior heritage documentation.

Scan Registration

The process of aligning multiple individual laser scans into a single unified point cloud by identifying common reference points or overlapping geometry between scans.

HBIM(Heritage Building Information Modelling)

A parametric BIM model of a historic building, built from survey data and enriched with heritage-specific attributes: period, condition, significance and material.

IFC(Industry Foundation Classes)

An open, ISO-standardised data format for sharing BIM models between different software platforms — the standard for interoperability in BIM-based heritage workflows.

Level of Development(LoD)

A BIM specification standard that defines how precisely each model element represents the real building — from approximate massing (LoD 100) to fabrication-level detail (LoD 500).

GIS(Geographic Information System)

Software that captures, stores, analyses and visualises spatial data — the standard platform for managing heritage site inventories, buffer zones and landscape analysis.

Buffer Zone

A legally defined protected area surrounding a heritage monument — in India, 100 m prohibited and 200 m regulated zones under the AMASR Amendment Act 2010.

Coordinate Reference System(CRS)

The mathematical system that defines how coordinates relate to real-world geographic locations — the standard for ensuring spatial data from different sources aligns correctly.

Drone Survey

The use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) carrying a camera or sensor to capture data for mapping, photogrammetry or inspection — now standard for inaccessible heritage areas.

Remote Pilot Licence(RPL)

The DGCA licence required to operate a drone commercially in India — obtained by completing an approved training programme and passing the DGCA examination.

Digital Sky

The DGCA's online platform for drone registration and flight permission — all commercial drone operators in India must register their aircraft and file flight notices here.

ASI(Archaeological Survey of India)

The Government of India body responsible for protecting, conserving and maintaining India's approximately 3,693 centrally protected monuments.

INTACH(Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage)

India's largest non-governmental heritage organisation, responsible for documenting unlisted heritage, the INTACH Charter and professional capacity-building in conservation.

AMASR Act(Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act)

The primary Indian legislation protecting centrally important monuments and archaeological sites — defining protected monuments, prohibited areas and the role of ASI.

DGCA(Directorate General of Civil Aviation)

The Indian government authority that regulates all civil aviation including drones — responsible for the Drone Rules 2021, the Remote Pilot Licence and the Digital Sky platform.

NMA(National Monuments Authority)

The statutory body established under the AMASR Amendment Act 2010 to manage permissions for development within the regulated areas around ASI protected monuments.
