What file formats should I use for archiving heritage documentation in India?
For drawings: PDF/A-1b (archival PDF). For photographs: TIFF uncompressed or JPEG at quality 12, with full IPTC metadata. For point clouds: E57 or LAS 1.4. For 3D models: OBJ + MTL + TIFF texture maps. For reports: PDF/A-1b. Avoid proprietary formats (DWG, RVT, Faro proprietary) as sole archival format — they are version-dependent and will become unreadable. Always produce both working and archival format copies.
Do I need to connect a heritage survey to Survey of India coordinates?
Connection to Survey of India GTS benchmarks and the national coordinate system is required when the survey will be integrated with GIS data, when it must be related to a wider site or landscape survey, or when the regulatory authority requires it (ASI typically requires GTS benchmark connection for significant surveys). For surveys of single buildings for conservation purposes where GIS integration is not required, an independent internal datum is acceptable provided it is fully described on the drawings.
How long should heritage documentation be retained?
For significant heritage buildings: permanently. For other heritage documentation: minimum 50 years. The practical challenge is digital format obsolescence — formats that cannot be read 50 years from now effectively do not exist. The commitment to long-term retention must include a commitment to periodic format migration (every 10–15 years) and at least two independent physical storage copies in separate locations.
