Photogrammetry Capture Plan Template

Plan a photogrammetry capture before mobilising to site, so that accuracy targets, equipment and coverage are worked out in advance rather than improvised on the day. This is the planning counterpart to the on-site Photogrammetry Capture Quality checklist — fill this before you travel; use the checklist while you shoot.

How to use this template

The quality of a photogrammetric model is largely decided before the first photograph — in the choice of ground sample distance, camera-to-subject distance and coverage strategy. This template makes those decisions explicit and shareable with the team, so nobody arrives on site guessing at overlap or how many images the job needs.

Work top to bottom: set the accuracy target first, because it drives the required GSD, which in turn drives capture distance and image count for every element.

1 · Subject and target accuracy

Subject / element to be captured
Required output — orthophoto scale / model LoD / mesh detail
Target ground sample distance (GSD)e.g. 2mm/px for façade detail; finer for carving and inscriptions
Required georeferencing accuracylocal scale only, or survey-grade with GCPs

2 · Equipment plan

Camera body / drone
Lens / focal length
Support — tripod, pole, gimbal, ladder, scaffolding
Lighting — available light, flash, panels
Batteries and storage — quantity for full-day capture

3 · Capture strategy per element

Break the subject into elements and plan coverage for each
ElementMethod (nadir / oblique / close-range)DistanceOverlap %Est. images

4 · Control and scale plan

GCP strategy — number, distribution, measurement method
Check points reserved for accuracy verification
Scale bars / known distances if GCPs not used

5 · Timing, data and backup plan

Best light / time window for this subject
Estimated total images and raw data volume
