Most business websites fail because they are slow on mobile, unclear about what they offer, and have no working contact path. Design is usually not the problem. Speed, clarity and a functional enquiry flow are.
Why does a good-looking website still fail to bring in enquiries?
A website can look polished in a design presentation and do almost nothing in production. The gap usually comes down to three things that have nothing to do with aesthetics: it loads too slowly for the user to wait, it does not answer the visitor's actual question quickly enough, and there is no obvious way to get in touch that works.
In the Indian market, where more than 60% of web traffic comes from mobile devices — often on 4G connections — a page that takes more than four seconds to load on a phone has already lost most of its visitors. They have not judged the design. They have left.
What is the single most common mistake in business website design?
The most common mistake is writing for the business owner rather than the visitor. A homepage that leads with 'We are a leading provider of innovative solutions' is describing the company from the inside. A visitor arriving from a search query is asking one question: can you solve my specific problem?
This shows up most visibly in service pages. A page titled 'Our Services' with a bulleted list of offerings is not answering anything. A page that explains what problem the service solves, who it is for and what happens when you get in touch — that is answering something.
How does slow page speed cost a business real money?
Google's research shows that for every one-second delay in mobile load time, conversion rates drop by around 20%. For a Coimbatore business getting 200 visitors a month, the difference between a 2-second site and a 6-second site could be the difference between 40 enquiries and 8.
The slow sites are usually slow because of unoptimised images (PNG files several megabytes in size when they should be WebP files under 100KB), third-party scripts loading synchronously, and no caching configured on the server.
None of these are design decisions. They are technical ones, and they are fixable in a day if someone is looking for them.
What does a working contact flow actually look like?
A working contact flow means: a visitor can see how to get in touch within the first screen, the form or number works, and something happens when they use it. The number of business websites with broken contact forms or phone numbers that ring unanswered is higher than anyone in the industry admits.
For B2B businesses in particular, a specific, low-friction next step works better than a generic 'Contact Us' button. 'Request a sample' for a textile supplier. 'Book a free site visit' for an architect. 'Ask about ERP pricing' for a software firm. The more specific the action, the higher the conversion.
How can you tell if your current website is failing?
The clearest signal is that the website generates no unsolicited enquiries — meaning, no one contacts you because they found you online. If every client comes through word of mouth or direct referral, the website is decorative rather than functional.
Secondary signals: you have to explain your website URL to people rather than them finding you; Google does not return your site for searches related to your services; your mobile page loads in more than three seconds.
If any of these are true, the site is not working — regardless of how it looks.
