SEO, AEO, GEO - What They Mean and Which One Your Business Needs

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) helps you rank in Google. AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) helps you appear in AI assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) helps AI systems cite and recommend your content. Most Indian businesses need SEO first, then AEO as AI search grows.

What is SEO and does it still matter in 2026?

SEO — Search Engine Optimisation — is the practice of making your website appear in Google's search results when someone types a relevant query. It covers page speed, mobile experience, content quality, backlinks from other sites and structured data that helps Google understand what you offer.

It still matters enormously. Google processes over 90% of search queries in India. For a business in Coimbatore, a well-optimised website that ranks on the first page for 'ERP setup Tamil Nadu' or 'school website Coimbatore' is a consistent source of qualified enquiries — without paying for ads every month.

The businesses that dismiss SEO as optional are usually the ones whose competitors are quietly capturing the traffic they are missing.

What is AEO — Answer Engine Optimisation?

AEO is optimising your content to appear inside AI-powered answer engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and similar systems. When someone asks an AI assistant a question, the system pulls answers from web sources it considers authoritative. AEO is the practice of becoming one of those sources.

The difference from SEO is subtle but important. SEO gets you a link on a results page. AEO gets your content quoted or paraphrased inside the answer itself — often without the user clicking through to your site at all. That is a loss in direct traffic, but a gain in authority and brand recognition.

Practically, AEO requires well-structured content that answers specific questions clearly. Question-style headings, concise direct answers at the top of a page, and comprehensive coverage of a topic all contribute to AEO performance.

What is GEO — Generative Engine Optimisation?

GEO is the newest of the three. It refers to optimising your site so that large language models — the AI systems powering ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and others — incorporate your content into their knowledge base and cite you when generating responses.

The levers for GEO are different from traditional SEO. Backlinks from authoritative sources, clear structured data (schema markup), factual and specific content, and explicitly allowing AI crawlers access to your site all influence whether AI systems treat you as a credible source.

Your robots.txt file, for instance, should explicitly allow crawlers like GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. Most sites either block them by default or never think about it.

Which one does your business actually need right now?

For most businesses in Coimbatore and Tamil Nadu in 2026, the priority order is: SEO first, AEO second, GEO third.

Start with SEO because it addresses the largest and most immediate source of search traffic. If your website is not indexed by Google, not mobile-friendly and not structured for relevant keywords, no amount of AI optimisation will move the needle. The foundation has to exist before you build on it.

Once your SEO is working — pages indexed, speed acceptable, content targeting the right queries — AEO becomes the natural extension. Write content in a question-and-answer format. Use structured headings. Give direct answers at the top of each section. These changes serve both traditional search and AI answer engines.

GEO is worth addressing in parallel with AEO: allow AI crawlers in your robots.txt, implement schema markup and build backlinks from authoritative sources. These are largely one-time structural changes that compound over time.

What does this look like in practice for an Indian SME?

A textile distributor in Tirupur needs their website to appear when a buyer searches 'cotton yarn supplier Tamil Nadu' on Google — that is SEO. If that buyer asks ChatGPT 'who are reliable yarn suppliers in Tamil Nadu,' and the AI mentions your business — that is AEO and GEO working together.

For a school in Coimbatore, the equivalent is appearing in Google when parents search 'CBSE school near me' (SEO), and being cited by an AI assistant when a parent asks 'what should I look for in a good CBSE school in Coimbatore' (AEO/GEO).

The three are not competing strategies. They are layers that build on each other, and the investment in each one strengthens the others.
